Flicker Free Holy Grail Ramping with Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO

My new tutorial explaining how to shoot transitions with full, flicker-free 3-way ramping (Shutter, ISO, Aperture) is available now.

Check it out in the tutorials section:

Just as a By The Way, the NMX controller is smart enough to move your camera (Stage Zero or whatever you have) at the end of exposure – by default. I have mine connected to the flash sync port, and no matter how long the exposure is – the NMX doesn’t move the slider until the exposure ends. (I had to do a considerable work-around with another setup using DragonFrame – I had to use an MX3 controller just to tell DragonFrame to move at the end of exposure – so it’s nice that the NMX doesn’t require any extra hardware to accomplish the desired behavior).

  2. Hi Gunther,

    Great tutorial!!!.

I have a question about the connection between the Camera and Statge One, you say bout put the slider in slave mode and then connect the flash sync port of the camera . But the flash sync trigger the sync signal at the start of exposure (for exemple if you connect a flash), then, for a exposure about 30 seconds the slider start to moving while the camera is with the shutter open, not? Can you clarify this question if it is possible?.

Any newness about the Canon cameras and the posibility that allows for interval shooting without opening and closing the aperture in between shots? We have a Canon 6D too, and I revised the Magic Lantern page but I don’t see any functionnality about this.

I’m thinking to buy the Stage One Slider with the RamperPro controller, RamperPro it’s an advanced intervalometer with Holy Grail, bulb ramping, ND filters implementations, etc, can connect to the slider, etc, but is a expensive solution. Do you think that qDslrDashboard have the same posibilities and then comparable to RamperPro?

    Thanks and regards,

    Jose

      Hi Jose,
It doesn’t matter, if the sync signal comes with the opening of the shutter, since you can always set a delay in the controller. No news about Canon, not that I know.
I have both here, RP and qDDB and I find myself using qDDB all the time.

      1. Hi Gunter,

        Thanks for your repply…

We have two posibilities to buy a slider:

1.- Buy the Slider One with NMX and control with qDslrDashboard .
2.- Buy the slider Stage One with RamperPro controller.

We have the Canon 6d with a Samyang 14mm/2.8(manual lense) and Tamron 24-70/2.8. I not have experience with Time Lapses, and my interesting about this ir for timelapses with transitions from day to night, with the Stars and Via Lactea in the night. Initially I’m thinking about the second option to buy because the RP have the posibilities about to use ND filters and I think that with this aid is better because I need to use the Samyang lenses with manual aperture fixed at 2.8 (during all time lapse) because this aperture is needed for Via Lactea at night but at day with this aperture fixed at 2.8 surely I need a ND filter….

What do you think about this? Your advice to buy a slider solution would be about the first option better than second?.

        Thanks a lot Gunther.

        Jose

I’d go for the first option, since I made good experiences with the NMX controller and think that the qDDB ist a great option for very easy transitions.
But I must admit, I have no experience with the RP as motion controller.
